Who's setting with me Sept 1st-4th?

That's great cochins!

I sure hope it makes it all the way. That would be really neat to watch.

I candled all the eggs except the 30 Silkies Friday before heading to the deer camp. Here's where we stand:

Duck eggs: 5/5 good

Asstd Layers: 6/9 good ( 1 clear, and 2 I can't see, the shell is way dark )

Asstd Bantams: 7/9 good ( 2 clear )

OE/EE: ?/6 ( They all looked clear, but they've only been in the bator a few days, gonna leave them in another week )

Out of all the eggs above, the only shipped ones are the OE/EE..I don't think it was the shipping, tho. They were packed well, and not shook up bad. Shipped eggs always start developing for me, it's usually an issue with receiving non-fertile eggs that I have to deal with.

I will candle the Silkie eggs when I get home this evening.

Awesome, how are the turkey eggs coming?

And good luck with your silkie eggs! I do love my two little silkies, my one will follow me around and jump on my lap, he loves to have his back rubbed and he loves to snuggle, he's my little sweet heart. The other isn't as friendly, but will not fuss if I hold him and will let me pet him and talk to him. Sorry if I'm repeating myself, I'm participating in 3 hatch alongs so I often forget what I say in which, hahaha.

I put the turkey eggs in the incubator on the 28th, I think I'll give them a week before I candle them.

As for the Silkie eggs I candled them a few minutes ago:

Out of 30 eggs I had 3 early quitters, 6 clear, and 21 LOOKING REALLY NICE!!!

I threw out the quitters, gonna give the clears 2 or 3 more days, and if no veining I will toss them. I was SO happy to see SO many developing perfectly!! Now, if I can only keep the humidity right where it needs to be....I am trying the wet-bulb along with my digital hgrometer.

Just judging by the percentage of fertile eggs I received from this breeder, I will definitely be buying from her in the future if I want more shipped eggs.

Well I was super happy with my hatch with the dry incubation technique. Obviously the shipped eggs didn't develop, but all the ones that did hatched. I kept it at 30 - 35% the first 18 days and 50% the last 3 and everyone hatched, so if you don't count the crappy non developing eggs, I had a 100% hatch rate. I think my humidity was too high before. I'm thinking of buying a few more eggs from the same seller because I didn't realize how rare the silver laced cochin bantams are. I can't find any other breeders that are still working with them and I've been searching like crazy! But I have to sell some more hens too because I now have a 20 chickens limit...

Son of a gun! I got an email today saying I will NOT be getting my replacement hatching eggs. I'm a bit upset. I was sold bad eggs, he admitted and now I don't get compensated for it like I was told I would be.

So this is it for this year. I packed up my incubator and will store it until spring. I pray I have a male in the last two I hatched and a nice one to boot. I kept a few females from the other breeder. The chicks I did hatch these past few weeks are really great though. I'm grateful for what I do have. I have to cut this one as a loss. Lesson learned. I'll only be buying straight from the breeders list this coming spring.

It would be better if I can hatch my own!!! However, I'll most likely be buying at least one more batch this spring of the Ameraucana breed. I have 3 blacks and 2 blues, but I'm not sure which ones will be good for my kids to show.

Maybe a piece of pie will make me feel better.;)

My youngest loves my homemade apple pie! I actually made the filling and crust myself. I cut out hearts and tell my daughter I bake with love.

Pie anyone?

He said that particular breed was shut down.:/. I'm really upset, but there's nothing I can do. I was not compensated for my bad hatch as promised.:(. I will take this as a learning lesson though. It looks like I'm starting over in the spring. I'm not sure who I'm keeping from what I have now. It will depend what they look like after their true feathers are in.

It's probably for the best anyways. I'll start over in the spring. This will give me a lot of time getting to know the 5 I kept. So far they are pretty sweet and loved to be held. I have 3 four week olds and the 2 that hatched 10 days ago. It was not a nice thing to do at all.

This is how I hatch, except I raise my humidity to 60% and once several pip at a time or I have wet chicks the humidity jumps to 70%. I have awesome success with the right fertile eggs.

I am definitely going with the dry incubation this go round. I was sick when I realized I had drowned those chicks last time.

That pie looks absolutely delicious!!! I'm out of apples right now, but I have peaches....might have to make a peach cobbler for dessert tonite.

I need to get my butt in there and hit the sewing machine. I have about 2/3 of my blocks made for the quilt I'm working on. Need to get it done, I have several more to get finished, not to mention my Christmas projects......
