Hi,

I adopted a flock of 5 hens a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure 4 of them are laying, and one is just finishing her molt. Last week I started getting a small egg, very light brown and much more pointedly "egg-shaped" than the other medium brown eggs I'm used to seeing. My layers are a Barred Rock, RIR, Speckled Sussex and Brahma.

I know pictures would be ideal but I'm on dial-up and not picture uploading friendly.

Thanks for any help. I've tried researching it myself but all the info I see says all my girls should lay about the same type egg. I think?

New to this, but having a blast!

Generally yes, they lay about the same. And honestly, yours being hatchery-based as most hens are out there. . . They can vary quite a bit too, so the key is for you to find out yourself, as your own hens may have their own specific traits.

For example, I have a Brahma with speckled eggs and a matte surface, one with a glossy surface and striations through the eggs, and another (passed away) who had a big rough blotch of pink on the top of every egg she laid.

My Barred Rock's eggs are more golden brown and slimmer and more pointed at the top than my Orpington's. (My EE's eggs are easy to identify!)

Thanks for the responses. I took what Illia said to heart and found out for myself!
