Who typically lays a darker egg, a Black Australorp or a Rhode Island Red? One of my girls is laying while the other hasn't started yet. I haven't been able to catch who's laying. The eggs I'm getting are a little darker (not much) than my Buff Orpington or Silver Laced Wynan. Which of the two do you think would be darker?

my rhose island reds lay different shades of brown some really light and some really dark. sorry, hope you find out who it is!

My BA lay a dark brown. I think the only real way to tell is watch who goes in the box and when she comes out look and see if there is an egg in there. I have seen both breeds vary a lot on there egg color.

Here is my BA eggs. They are the darkest eggs labled BA.

Thanks! This new mystery egg I'm getting is just a little darker than what your SLW looks like. I have been trying to catch which one goes in and have caught my other 3 (EE, BO, and SLW) but both the RIR and BA are squatting like crazy and showing lots of signs but I leave for work before they go back in the coop. Maybe this weekend I'll catch her! I'm guessing it's Amber the RIR. I'm sure hoping one of my girls gives me dark brown. I was a little disappointed that Frisbee -EE lays a light tan, almost pink egg. Was so hoping for blue or green.

the "pink" is nice though and they all taste sooooo good that I'm happy with whatever they lay. They just look so pretty when there's variety! If I had more room I'd be looking at getting more chicks! Ohhhh I didn't say that!

try looking at their vents. The laying hen's vent will seem oval, open and moist, like an egg recently passed through. The non-layer's vent will be a small, closed circle. If that doesn't help, you can try this: put a drop of blue food coloring on one of their vents. If that hen lays, it will get color on the egg. Good luck!
