Why Are Buff Orpingtons So Populat?

They don't seem to lay as well as most of the other very popular backyard breeds, like Rhode Island Reds or Barred Rocks. Is it their looks that makes Buff Orpingtons so popular? Exceptional temperament? What do you think??

Big beautiful round birds, lovely golden color, usually decent temperament and they're good mothers when they brood (as long as they do brood-sometimes hatchery stock just doesn't).
