Why are "chick days" right now?

We "inherited" some older hens and are not ready for more chicks now, but I was wondering why we see "chick days" at every feed store right now? Can chickens not raise chicks year round? Can I pick up a new pullet anytime of the year?

Feed stores have chicks at the beginning of spring each year. You can always order from a hatchery anytime or buy from a local who has chicks for sale, but usually the feed stores don't keep chicks all year - just at the beginning of spring.
