Why are chickens so addictive?

…this is the question I was asking myself driving out last night to obtain two Showgirls I was sooooo excited to pick up. Grabbing cash from the ATM. Told spouse I had an “errand”. Put the new girls in my coop under cover of darkness so the flock & my husband would just wake up together no big deal.

Anyway here’s my score- these two are satins and I am already in love. They’re so ridiculous.

That's a good question! I just had a notion in December to raise chickens when I started having to stay home with my dad and needed "something to do, so I don't go stir crazy".

I started w 12 hatching eggs. It was my first time hatching with a finicky countertop incubator, in the end I had 5 chicks, but one had to be rehomed due to being super aggressive. The four remaining chicks turned out to be 2 males and 2 females.

Well, that wasn't a workable number so the chicken math kicked in and I decided to get more chicks to split between the two males . . . now I have 22 chicks (4 that are 15 weeks old, the rest are 7 weeks).

I'm already planning who to breed with who, next spring lol...

My dad looked in the yard after they were all free ranging together and assumes the the 4 older chicks had chicks already, lol . . . I'm not telling him any different.

I think because there's so many choices, and so many ways to keep them, as well as it's easy to add, and they are easy to care for if the set up is good.

It's an ever evolving hobby for me. Always something to look forward to when keeping chickens. From collecting eggs, to hatching chicks, and to seeing how they all turn out, to building more pens or coops.

There's also the simple pleasure of watching chickens do chicken things. It grounds us and reminds us to take time to enjoy every day. Chickens are eternal optimist. Every day is a great day to a chicken.

I often spend my down time just watching them be chickens, either in the yard with them are staring blissfully out the back door.

I fully agree! For me, as an industrial designer by trade (and lifelong tinkerer), I've had a ton of fun with my coop build. There's also something so lovely and satisfying about watching something grow—especially at the pace of chicken raising. Eggs are also positive feedback ◡̈

I've also loved getting to know each chicken's personality. Watching my birds free-range has also done wonders for my mental health/staying present.
