Why are my chicks pooping blood! PLEASE HELP!

If they're only one month old they need to be on chick starter until right around 6 months (when the hens are about to lay eggs), then @ 6 mos you can change to layer feed. The layer feed has extra calcium in it that the little chicks can't process at this point. I'd change to chick starter, maybe that's why they're pooping blood.

Maybe someone else can chime in.

You do not have to have medicated feed. Most chicks get through fine without it. Mine are not on medicated feed. The medicated feed will not cure cocci but will help reduce the chance of them getting it. And chicks can still get cocci with medicated feed. It depends a lot on the strain of the protazoa that causes it. I they have cocci, you need to treat for it. Do they exhibit the other symptoms of cocci? They are described in my other post. It may not be cocci.

You should not be feeding layer to young chicks. Layer feed is high in calcium and excess calcium can damage an internal organ. I can never remember if it is the kidneys or the liver. They should be on starter or grower until they are of laying age. I do not know if excess calcium could cause bloody poop.

Medicated chick starter may not be enough to combat a raging case of coccidiosis. It is only designed for prevention.

I would personally start a treatment of Amprolium in their water right away. You may be able to find this at your local co-op or farm supply store. Good luck.

My older chicks (10-14weeks) have solid poops with blood or some kind of red tissue and are acting totally normal...have been for several weeks. Cocci is bloody diarrhea, loose poops right? Since my chicks are acting fine. I posted a pic on this forum and people thought it looked ok..sometimes they pass some intestinal tissue through. Maybe this observation helps the OP?
