My little girls are starting to lay, but the weirdest thing is happening. Their eggs are either broken, or on the floor [one was just inside the door this morning, and I almost stepped on it. it was already cracked]

They eat the same layer feed as my hens. Any ideas what's up?

Their bodies are still learning how to deposit calcium and make shells. They also have to learn to use the boxes. Some of the shells are like sandpaper shaped into an egg oval but split with the contents missing. I had the same problem and it passed. I knew I had good layer ration with grit/oyster and assuming you also use a suitable feed, this will be temporary...

An egg on the floor is bad news. At best, the chickens will ignore it. Or, they will eat it

It's real important to get 'em off the floor.
