why are the digging

my chickens are in the range of 4 to 5 months of age and they are digging and digging it the ground hoes about a foot deep what are they doing it for

Chickens will dig holes in the dirt in order to lie in them and flap around, this is how they dust bathe! It helps them clean their feathers of poop and bugs and is healthy and normal behavior.

It's normal. They do something new every day. They are probably also looking for snacks.
