Can anyone tell me why these eggs are coming out like this? I have EE'S, GLW'S, Buff Orp's, SS, Barred Rock, Welsummers, and Delawares. Any idea on which could be laying them? Quite certain it's just one hen, as I get only one a day (sometimes miss a day). The girls are 23.5 weeks old. If you wet the egg, the white "disappears" but comes back when it dries.

According to the link provided in the post above...looks like too much calcium in the diet.

8. Calcium coated egg

These eggs have an extra, powdery layer of calcium, covering either the entire egg, or just one end of the egg. Causes are:

- Defective shell glands;

- Disturbance or stress during calcification process;

- Poor nutrition, for example excess calcium in the hen's diet.

It's hard to say just what's causing it.
Does it wash off?
If it's only one bird, it's likely just that bird is having problems processing calcium.
Or it could just be a new layer glitch....could be a long term glitch.
How long have they been laying?
How long has she been laying like this?

Ok, more info.. my girls have free choice Pen Pals Egg Maker, free choice oyster shell, and are let out for most of the day every day to free range on whatever they find. They get leftover veggies/fruit when we have it (maybe once a week?), as well clabbered milk once or twice a week. The "treats" they usually eat over the course of a few days, and I have 26 chickens, so it's spread out well. Sometimes they get a little scratch thrown in as well. They spend most of their day out of the pen, free ranging.

The white does not wash off, it's pretty hard. It disappears when went, but is white again when dry.
It's just one hen... I'm only getting 1 egg a day, and some days I don't get one, so I'm assuming it's just one of my gals.
The girls have been laying for 5 weeks total, started getting these not quite 2 weeks ago.

I'm quite certain it's not a calcium deficiency as my egg shells are nice and hard.

Sounds like that one hen has a malfunction of some sort in her egg machine....probably not a health risk, tho it could be if there are other signs of illness.
You can either live with the funny looking eggs, probably nothing to keep you from eating them....or cull her.

That's kind of what I was thinking... the actual egg is fine, it's just the shell that looks wonky.
I have no way of telling who is laying it, so I'm just going to see if it's a long term thing or just a new to laying kind of thing. Thanks!
