Why Bantams? I don't get it....

I wonder if it's a woman thing? I wouldn't have a trinket I had to feed. It's bad enough feeding layers that don't lay.

Here are my Reasons I have Bantams ..... They are Cute , Almost all of my broody Chicken breeds are Bantams , They dont take in as much feed , They I personaly think can me way friendlier then most breeds, Some are very very pritty like Japenease Bantams and Silkies , You can keep them in in your house .

My children love their silkies. They can hold them and they show them at the fair. For me these are "pets" and my other birds are dual chickens. For our family this is a way for the kids to enjoy Mom's hobby.

Oh, I love bantams! I have both bantams and large fowl. My large hen house is for the large fowl, then I have the banty coop, which is a smaller A-frame coop.

I was large fowl all the way at first, but then I wanted a silkie, and then a friend had a Polish bantam which was also frizzle, and I loved the look, so that's how I got started with the bantams.

They're funny, and they love to be picked up and cuddled, and they think they're SO BIG! haha

The bantams I choose are just "eye candy". So the little coop is my pet coop, BUT the Polish bantams as well as the Cochin bantams lay a pretty good sized egg that you can eat, about the size of a golf ball. For home, those eggs work just fine.

So, my little bantams are not only adoreable, but they also earn their keep too. Oh, I could go on and on about them!!!

Here are a few of the darlings!

I have both. The bantams are much friendlier, easier for the grandkids to handle and broody machines. Also I sell the bantam eggs. People love to use them for bite size deviled eggs. Makes great appitizers. My DH favorite chicken we have is a little black silkie. Whip follows him around and he is always holding her. We also take ours to area schools in the spring for the kids to see. Much easier to take the bantams in and they are calmer to work with around the children.

I respect all my animals for what they are and would never have a living 'trinket.' There are obvious reasons to have Bantams. They produce eggs just like LF do, smaller eggs taste just as good as large (their deviled eggs are always a hit). They're broody, great mamas, and if you like chicken tv it doesn't get any better. I like them. The main reason I have Banties is because I want to.

My bantams are awesome - i do have large fowl as wel. My bantams lay as good if not better than my large fowl. They are super friendly - and they require less space - less food - more cost efficient. To each his own really - if we all liked the exact same thing - life would be pretty boring!

I have silkies and standards. And still want a few seramas but after them I'm done getting bantys and will work more on my egg production.
I don't think it's just a "woman thing" either because my Dad is absolutely in love with the silkies. They're funny to watch

I have bantams for the following reasons:

1) Only one of the two of us eats eggs, so I'm sure we won't be lacking.
2) We had three LF BCM for 3 weeks, and they cleared all my grower feed, which would have taken my banties 2 months. So YES, they eat way less!
3) I can scoop a bantam up in one hand, flip it over, chuck it around a bit, pick up two others, juggle them, sit them on my shoulders... Try doing that with a BO. It's a two-handed-one-arm job.
4) Their poos are tiny compared to LF poos. I don't mind walking in small poos as much a big squelshy one.
5) They don't ruin my garden.
6) If I had heavy LF, my garden would look even smaller than it is. Bantams look just right in the garden.
7) Some bantams lay as big an egg as some LF, and more often.

I'm sure I have other reasons, but those are the ones that come to mind right now.

I agree they are my yard ornaments and I have around 50 of them.

Now back 20-30 years ago when I was raising my kids I raised the big chickens for food production 50 to a 100 at a time, and that served my purpose Plus kept some Hens back for eggs.

Now I can buy chicken in the store for 5 6 dollars, can't raise chickens for that, cost around 2- 3 dollars for the chicks then raise them up to butcher age not worth it to me nowadays.

And I love my moving flowers garden as I call them, and get eggs on top of it. Whats not to understand.
