I have invested a lot of time, money and effort into having chickens... my biggest headache so far... ironically.... getting the chickens! I want what I want for chickens; Buff Orpington Bantams. I really want to be able to go somewhere and purchase them... but nope I cant do that. Around here (Maine, Bangor area) it seems to be slim pickins! The local Tractor Supply apparently got a shipment of (random) birds today but they were all gone by 4 (when I showed up of course)... Our local Blue Seal has an order list for June delivery but no Orpingtons... WHAAAhAAAA!

I could order online but I have a space limitation too! I only want 4 or 5 birds. NOT 15! GOOD GRIEF!

Any ideas? Any locals with some secret chick source?

chickensforbackyards.com also has a lower minimum. The biggest issue (and why I haven't ordered online) is that shipping usually runs at least $30.00 because of the special heat packs and express shipping they use for smaller orders of chicks. But it is easier to get the particular breed you want.

There are other hatcheries with 3 chick minimum besides mypetchicken.com but I can't remember which ones right off the bat.

I feel your pain, I just want 2-4 wyndottes to round out my flock... no luck. The local feed stores get random varieties and sell out super quick. Have you tried your local craigslist?

Good Luck

- I'm considering just ordering 25 from a hatchery as ChickieBooBoo suggested, so I can get the breeds I really want; just not sure that DH will handle 25 very well (even if I promise to sell most of them)

I suppose that I could do that. My partner would have a COW if I brought that many chicks into the house though! Around here you have to purchase a minimum of 6 birds, I guess it is state law, so I do have someone that would take the extras... but 10... I dunno. Maybe I could give them away on Craigslist or something.... that's an idea though.
