WHY can't I easily get chicks???

When I decided I wanted chickens for eggs and I only had a few silkies, I posted an ad on Craigslist to find someone that would go in with me on an order from a hatchery. We ordered 25 SLW plus some EE chicks, and split them. I ordered and paid for them and then met the lady after they arrived and she paid me her portion. A little risky and if she would've backed out, I would have sold them.

"Around here you have to purchase a minimum of 6 birds, I guess it is state law" - If you heard that from TSC - its BS (as far as I know) around here, they are the only place that does that, all the other feed stores will sell you 1 if thats all you want. Also, if you speak to a manager at TSC, often times they will allow you to buy less than 6.

You should have no problem selling chicks, or pullets on Craigslist. I have been doing it for years. I have also bought some there.
I am picking up 5 new Splash Orps on Sat to add to the 11 chicks I am raising right now. I will keep only a few of this years batch to add to our current flock when appropriate. The rest will be sold after they are 3 or so months. They go fast, too. :)

Put an ad on Craigslist asking if anyone wants to slit an order from the hatchery that has the breed you want. That way they can share in shipping costs and you know the extra 20 birds have a home to go to. If it is that had to get chickens in your area, there must be others in your same situation.

I feel your pain, I wanted what I wanted as well, and my kids and I drove 2 1/2 hours one way to get what we wanted! We have extras as they were all straight run....it will be worth it in the end as we will end up with at least some of what we wanted the most! You are very right the buff orpington bantams are pretty adorable! We are getting two standard BO chicks a week from tomorrow to add to our crew!

Good luck!

Yep, checked purelypoultry also... I emailed them about the 5minimum thing because in the checkout it said 15minimum birds. They emailed me back immediately and told me that the 5 minimum is per type of chicken and 15 is the minimum order. I still might do that though and put the rest on craigslist like others have suggested.

I think Murray McMurray (online) has a limit of 6. It IS tough to find them around Bangor. We ordered ours from Blue Seal, but only because we wanted what they were offering (RIR, Wyandottes). You have to be QUICK at Tractor Supply, don't you? Those chicks go fast. We were there last weekend - when we got there there were all sorts of chicks and by the time we checked out, there were only a few left!
