I have the chickens I thought would be broody types but NEVER have had one go broody in over 2 years.

Cochins, Wyandottes, oegb, serama, new hampshire reds.....I have ducks eggs for the first time and no broody birds to set them:(

Ok I feel better now pouting to somone other thatn DH who thinks thank god we don't need more birds.

Maybe it's because you want them to go broody. I didn't care if my Orpingtons went broody or not and now I have a broody, lol.

Probally true, when you want them to they won't, I even tried putting one chicken in large dog crate for 2 days see if she would set on the eggs, then felt bad for her and took her out.

Wasn't it gritsar who had a seriously long broody drought because she wanted one so bad?

Meanwhile, little ol' me with no rooster and no fertile eggs got them CONSTANTLY last year. Nothing yet this year, though, which is interesting. Got rid on one of the worst offenders, though, so maybe it was a sympathetic hormonal thing or something.

You've got to WANT eggs. Go out and threaten to fry the girls up if they don't lay two a day. Swear at them if they sit in the box longer than 30 seconds. Keep long checklists of who's laying and who isn't. THEN you'll get a broody.

You need sourland to do a little broody magic for you; that's who gritsar blames for her Broody Bonanza.

I didn't care, either - and i've had a BO, a Welsummer, and a Sebright go broody for me. I THINK I may have my Cuckoo Marans broody now; will confirm it tomorrow.

Talk to sourland, he's the resident broody witch doctor. BUT..... be careful what you ask for, he's really bad at math!
