Why did my chicken die?

My 1 year old Red had her beak opened most of the day yesterday and I could tell she was not feeling well. This morning when I went to let the other 6 girls out of the run, she did not come out. She was still perched but very alert. I few hours later I saw her in a nesting box very sluggish. Then a bit later, I found her dead outside the coop. What could have happened?

Sounds like she possibly may have been egg impacted. Sorry for your loss.

That definitely makes sense. She was a small chicken and laid huge eggs. She has not laid in a while. Is there anything I could have done to prevent this from happening?
