Can someone tell me what happened? We had a 7 year old chicken we had nursed back to health after a raccoon attack. She had been severely injured with her innards exposed under her wing. We kept her inside for months and nursed her to health. She was a pet and was more fond of us than the other chickens. She was back to laying eggs and about a week ago we put her back with the flock. Today they were playing around the yard. She was perfectly healthy it seemed. She was eating and running. My son picked her up to put her in the coop and I lifted the wing to see where her injury had been. It was all feathered over and looked perfect. I touched the area. At the end she twisted her head in an odd way I’d never seen a chicken do. Then my son went and put her in the coop and she fell over as if dying. We picked her back up and her head was limp and she just died. Why?
We are so sad here. Photo below of her yesterday where she would have preferred to sleep if we didn’t put her in the coop.
