I have three one month old chicks that I keep in my kitchen. They are in a cardboard box in a dog crate about three feet long and two feet wide. Everyday when I pick out their poop I let them run around in my kitchen. When they all hopped out I noticed a feather from my Ameracauna. Then later I found two more!!

Is that normal for a one month to loose a couple feathers? I think she is in the middle of the pecking order.
Thank you for any information!

I hope its normal because mine lose feathers too. They're 2 months old. Are you getting them outside yet? My girls are in a dog kennel too. I put the bottom pan on top for a roof then they can scratch ground. At first I wrapped it with some hardware cloth and zip tied it in place so they could get out between the bars, now its kind of a tractor in their yard

I'm so glad it is normal! Yes, my chicks have gone outside many times! I just let them go where they want and follow them around or they follow me! That''s is a good idea with the dog kennel for outside, Jaxemae! Thanks!

chicks go through a stage called moulting. they usually hit it a little older. they start loosing fluff and getting feathers. they grow all of their tale feathers. my first batch of chicks i became very worried also when they lost all of their fluff but was relieved when they were back to normal and fully feathered soon! older chickens also normally get this once a year.

Around 4-5 wks old my 6 pullets started loosing feathers. I swear I could have a feather bed by now and they are only 14wks old. It's been constant too.

could they be pecking each other? to small of a space they will do that. and once they loose all theyre chick fluff and are covered in feathers they should be where they have lots of room,

I think I'm gonna keep using but I really need to get another for my dogs again in the house.
