If I were you, I'd post a picture of him in the, "What breed or gender is this?" You'll get more answers there. My guess is a Delaware, but I'm not breed savvy. I have a couple Deleware hens, so I may be bias.

If you live on 2.2 acres in the south, he'll likely find a good amount of his nutrition on your land if you let him free range. You may be able to get away with just giving him leftovers you don't eat. If you want a single, almost all encompassing book on raising chickens, I highly recommend, "The Small-Scale Poultry Flock", by Harvey Ussery.

I'm excited for you, as it appears you certainly weren't looking to keep chickens, but you've taken to it with grace! The people here will warn you, though, that there is this funny thing called, "Chicken Math", and it'll get you if you aren't careful.

Definitely build a coop and buy some hens for your little guy! Either way, he needs to have some shelter, even if he only stays with you temporarily. He is vulnerable outside, especially in the winter when it's cold.

I'm glad that he found you, and I hope you enjoy his company, and get him some hens. Hens also come with nice fringe benefits. Omelettes.

Thank you everyone for your help. I have a plan for building a coop, but looked up some coops online (walmart) and I think there may be not a huge difference in cost for build vs. buy.

I let Ricardo in the garage for the past two days because it was cold out. He goes to the same spot to sleep. He poops and I clean it. I don't mind it too much. I HATE that he wakes me at 4:30 and tomorrow I go back to work (I teach). So, sorry to say it, Ricardo cannot sleep in the garage tonight. I need to get moving on a decision about the coop: buy vs. build. I have a person who is looking to get rid of two hens, so once the coop is built, he will have some company.

Chicken math...I can only imagine. I don't want to be one crazy chicken lady with 35 chickens.

I will keep you posted on our progress.
