Why did you get your first chickens?

Growing up as a city kid... I spent my summers in rural Wisconsin with my cousins who all lived on dairy farms. Being surrounded by animals from cows, pigs and chicken,s I always dreamed of having my own piece of "Country life". One year ago my wife and I bought a 110 year old farm house and began creating our mini farm. Spending time with the flock is relaxing for me and I feel a bit like a country kid every time I'm with them. Next year will be a garden and maybe Ducks.

I got my first chickens as a challenge to prove to my dad that I could keep them alive. I got 25 Cornish x's, and only lost 2. I got under the watered and dies as a chick. The other was pecked to death. I love my chickens, and this year I am getting 50 Cornish x's. and 4 Russian Orloffs. I currently have 2 snowy call ducks. And continue adding poultry to my flock!

My dad and I built the coop ( I painted it ) then got the chickens in the summer. They really are a dream come true and are just as cuddly as a dog

I grew up in the city and had many regular city pets. I love animals of all kinds. I had never thougth of having chickens as a pet or for any other reason. My husband and I purchased a home in the counrty looking forward to country life. A few months after moving in a friend had to get rid of her chickens. My husband and I talked it over and said we would take a few. We got five. I knew nothing and am still learning every day. I was scared of them at first and found out a rooster got snuck into the mix even though I said no roosters. I quickly fell in love with all of them and have since added to our group. I see how wonderful it is to raise and wathc them grow. They are beautiful animals who provide us with wonderful eggs. I look forward to learning more and sharing here.

We started when the Elementary and the High School started hatching the baby chicks. Here they start hatching eggs in the schools in the 2nd grade. The children learned a lot and loved it.

To teach my 4 kids a little responsibility and the pure enjoyment of the birds. It's gone well so far (2 months into it). We have 15 various hens from an auction, 3 RIR chicks we hatched out 2 weeks ago and 35 assorted eggs in the incubator due March 9th. It's very good for the family as a whole and I highly recommend it to everyone! BYC is my go to resource and I appreciate the folks on here very much.

My first baby chickens. 2 Clifornia whites and 3 Res Sex links. I got them about 5 days ago, I think they might be 1week 1/2 maybe 2 weeks old. They are amazing, so fun to watch. I have no idea which are male or female. fingers crossed!!
