why did you start keeping chickens

Have been begging DH for about 4 years about getting chickens. When I was 13 my great aunt Jessie had chickens and I absolutely loved them. So after researching and several people telling me how dirty and disgusting chickens are, my Hubby said "No Way!!!" I kept at him about how great chickens were and how much fun it would be for the kids, and me. Still.....NO, NO,NO! So I changed tactics. We scrapped our lawnmowers last Christmas to have money for the kids gifts, so no lawnmower this year. Our neighbors and my dad have been helping to mow. My plan is to fence in half of our yard and get some goats to keep the grass down, and cut our yard maintenance time in half. Milk goats would be even better. So after 4 months of going on about the goats, he sneaks off one morning and comes home with an old rabbit hutch and 4 chickens. *LOVE,LOVE,LOVE* So I guess he was thinking that the chickens were the less of the two evils.....LOL One died, and we got two more, the neighbor dog ate one, so now back to 4, but thinking about getting 3 more in the spring. I still want to get a couple of goats/lambs, but I thought I would give him a little break for now. The kids love them, especially Suzy our ISA, she got a Fabulous Chicken Makeover this summer and was sporting some neon blue nailpolish......Ya know, it's not that easy to get them to cooperate when youwant to paint their toenails.....

Walmart has all these dog coustums that would work on a chicken if i had the $trust me my chickens would be getting dressed up. I was holding diffrent ones up so my teenager could see and she walked away from me and a guy in the isle laughed when i keeps saying wouldnt the chickens look cute in this.

YankieDoodle Girl and Little Farmer - I'm so glad we're not the only ones that paint our girls' toenails!

The main reason we started raising chickens was because of our Autistic daughter. The main food that she ate was chicken. When we found out that her blood had a ton of arsenic in it we did some research. We found that the poultry industry uses arsenic to beef up their chickens for larger birds. We have posted a lot of the research in our autism page on our web site.

Good lord! Working on a plan for raising our own dinner table birds now. Yeesh. I always wanted a self sustaining flock but we are zoned wrong for roosters. *breaking out the thinking cap*

We decided to raise chickens for the eggs since the price of eggs and chicken (whole uncooked) has steadily gone up over the last few years, along with everything else out there. It is getting harder to feed my family so we thought we would raise a few chickens and maybe a goose or 2... well now we have 2 goslings, 6 teenage chickens and 14 babies... (babies arrived yesterday morning, I ordered 4 females and they send 10 males to keep them warm, cool more chicken dinners... My neighbors will REALLY LOVE ME with all the crowing.

When I started checking into what this would all entail... raising chickens, I just fell in love with all the pics I saw.

I don't just mean the baby chicks either. The grown chickens are really cool too.
We only wanted like 6-10 chickens and now we have, at least 4 females and 10 males... not sure about the first 6 we got a few weeks ago. I don't even know if the goslings are male or female or one of each... We'll find out when they get older I guess.

I knew they boosted the chicken with something but I thought it was only hormones. Wow, That's it I am raising our own dinner table birds too... Once I figure out how to go from "oh your so cute" to "You're going to be Sunday dinner".
