i got my wife some 1 day old runner ducklings for christmas (the week after)and they have been outside for a couple weeks now, they have never been happier, they do have a heat lamp but hardly get under it even at night when the temps are in the teens, were you at in tn? i think the most important thing is to keep them from the wind, we are debatin on lettin them free range with the chickens

I'm in Church Hill, up near Bristol. We're in Hawkins County. Its been pretty darn cold here. I'm from NY and can handle the cold but the biting winds where I am has been bad! The snow and cold has been so bad here that my grandson has had more than a month off of school since Christmas!

They lost alot of their vacation days, including Monday. My grandson's griping because he has to go to school on Monday and most schools are closed. We have these winding "switch backs" here that get icy so they close everything.

Last year this time I had all my greens planted, my broccoli, cauliflower and a ton of other things planted. This year the ground is frozen solid.

so your up in the mtns, i think they would be ok, still if there out of the wind and have a heat lamp

Boy you gotta get them out of the house! Do you not have power to your coop? I even put some in the garage with a lamp last year...they are so messy! But we love 'um!

I have had a drop cord running down to my barn for the past 2 years! Wanted electricity in there but county wanted to tax me too much so we took out the meter and now I just use the drop cords for the 200 ft down to the barn. I have 5 brooder lamps going down there so I don't have to smell chicken poo. Baby ducks will be going down there, too. We have almost 90 Guinea Pigs in the house along with 7 cats. If I put one more animal in this house I will move out!

Have to laugh with you

I've had two silver Appleyards in a pool in my livingroom (which is under construction) since they hatched 8 weeks ago. After the third escape in two hours yesterday, I moved them out to the coop (which is in my garage). I did not put a heat lamp in there and with the heat of all the others, they are just fine. It never gets cold enough in there for the water to freeze even though it gets into the teens here at night. Can only take that stink so long

My Runner drake is about 6 or 7 months old now, and he can sustain a flight of about three feet in the air for about 8 feet. All of my runs have flight netting to protect the ducks from hawks anyways (and to keep the Mallards and Hookbills in), but, apparently, some Runners can sort of fly. Not very high, not for very long, but they can get up in a air for a few seconds. Mine always gets overexcited at feeding time, and flies from one side of the pen to the other, and he always overshoots and bumps his head on the far side of the pen!

I have six runner ducks 2 drakes and 4 hens. They are not very good show quality as they do not stand very straight and are kinda heavy, anyway mine can fly very well, and if its windy they'll get up on the hill and really fly.

Don't envy you having them in the house. We've done that a couple of times now and boy do they get smelly! Our runners I can't say fly, but when they were in the brooder (a tall rubbermaid tote) we had 1 that would hop out somehow. One day I heard a small "peep peep" follow me around the house. I thought the kids were playing a trick on me until I turned around and found it following me. This would be the same duckling that I was giving to my aunt that decided to jump out of the box I was transporting it in and start running around the car
