Why do most only hatch eggs in the Spring ?

Quote:
I saw an ad in Wilco the other day. They are selling chicks this September 6-18.

Wilco Farm Stores - Yes! We'll have Barred Rock, Ameraucana, Buff Orpington, Golden Sex Link & Rhode Island Red pullets.

I used to hatch year round but don't anymore and I will admit it's been rather nice the last couple of winters not having chicks in the basement all winter. I did always move them out fairly quickly to a brooder area in a couple of my coops, but there were always more hatching to take their place inside.

Thanks everyone for more replies ! I'm only hatching out 10 or so eggs we decided on. I don't think I'll be stocking the feed stores or anything like that ! But we will have more copper black maran hens for sale (maybe).

We do have one Tractor Supply Store nearby and luckily they always have plenty of bags of chick feed around. But no chickies, only in the spring (probably for Easter) !

Another feed store on occasion has some chickies (locals I'm sure).

And the other feed store was overcrowded with tons of chickies and chickens. We've only been there once to check it out.

We're only raising 10 more of the maran breed because we are creating a back-up hen (if I sell our last 2 today or tomorrow) and more hens as our own layers (for our eggs and more eggs to sell).

More chickies = more roosters to deal with ? That's always a thought in the back of my head. But for now, we'll just enjoy this batch of chickies and see which other breed we might want to multiply (our black silkies and splash silkies - whenever they move into their own isolated pens and start laying). Just waiting on our special order fence to come in from Tractor Supply !

But I'm so happy to hear others of you are hatching now too. Now I don't feel so weird about it. I wonder if there is less competition not hatching during the Spring since any other season besides Spring is an off-season ? We may be onto a secret sales strategy here...

Thanks guys !
