Why do my BA's feathers look like this?

If there's no feathers there then she may indeed need covering. My only real objection to the idea of saddles is when people make normally feathered hens wear them semi-permanently rather than get rid of a nasty rooster.

I think she will need a coat this winter. A couple others may as well but they are not near as bad as the one.
