Why do my chickens keep flying onto my back.

One day I was bending over and putting food in their bowl and on of them flew up and stood on top of me. Today, the same thing happened again with a different hen and this time I wasn't even bending over, just standing straight up. Is there any reason they are doing this?

Chickens are very sociable birds, we have a plank of wood across 2 upturn buckets, if we sit on it they will come up, sit on our laps or perch on shoulders. Most chickens do like to roost or sit high.... upturn a bucket, sit down and see!!

I think it can be a friendly behavior.

But with my Golden Sex Links (that I sold recently), they tried that exactly twice. The first time, I thought oh how cute. The second time I realized that they were trying to one-up me in the pecking order.

So make sure it is friendly. Also, more than one person on BYC has mentioned someone's eye getting pecked while they had a chicken on the shoulder.

I don't want chickens near my eyes.

Don't forget the numerous women who have lost earrings by letting the chickens ride on them!

I don't let them anywhere near my head anymore, I just gently shake them off or grab them if I can and put them back down. I am the dominant in the flock.

Mine will do that a lot- especially my cochin hen, Sticky, and my dutch hen, Dutchie. I don't let them on my shoulders though as I don't want them pecking at my face

THEY LOOOOOVE YOU!

LOL My Easter Egger is the QUEEN of flying onto my shoulders, she loves sitting up there watching the world lol. I just have to make sure I am not near the backyard fence when she does because I always worry she will use ME to get over the fence. But as long as I am not near the fence I will let her sit on me

watch out for poops below! lol

EE's are notorious for hopping onto shoulders, backs, arms, any place on you that provides height. I forgot heads. They like to perch on heads. Yeah - watch those ear-rings!

I had two BO that did that...my favorite roo...jeannieroo use to do it all the time.
She loved me best...LOL I loved her(him really but I thought she was a hen when I named him)
I loved him best but he had to go as we wanted no roos.
My other BO WendyLady will still jump on my shoulder if I am sitting in the run with them.
