Why do my chickens sleep in their nests

And not the perches? They use the outdoor perches during the day but sleep in their egg laying boxes at night?

The perches should be higher than the nest boxes, so they go to the highest point to roost.

They are. My hubby built it to spec But they choose to sleep in their boxes.

They were born at Christmas and only one has laid her first egg yesterday. So quite young.

Oh that explains it. Sometimes it takes several months for them to like to roost. I would block off all the nest boxes but one if you only have one laying to encourage them to roost. Ideally you would block them all off but if one is laying you don't want to do that.
