Why do my EE pullets do this when in the nesting box

This is GREAT! I wondered about it, too. I caught my EE's and RR's doing the same thing. After laying an egg, my EE goes the extra mile and throws (or expertly places) pine needles onto (and into) her feathers. I got to giggling when I realized she looked a little like Tina Turner. She had all these pine needles sticking out of her feathers and she walked around the yard picking up more and putting them on her back. Funny stuff!

I use hay as well. Before they started laying they would get in the box's & scratch everything out including the fake egg. Now that 3 are laying I don't have this problem. Guess, they figured it out. This is hard to believe . I've never had any poop in the box's.
