Hi
My Ameraucanas have a new coop, and I used the same nesting boxes from the old coop so it'd be familiar. Sure enough, they laid eggs in the boxes. Except that they have lately made two additional nests in my horses' hay bale storage, one in a corner on the floor, and one on top of the bales. I'm sorta okay with that, since I know to look there, but the dumber hen lays her eggs on top of the bales, and it usually rolls off and cracks.
But they also still lay eggs in the nest boxes.
So, what's the dillio?
Are they just too hot in the new coop? It's in the shade with the windows open
Are the 2 month old chicks driving them nuts in the coop? Cuz the chicks also hang out in the hay bales.
Even though there are multiple nesting boxes, they all want to use the same one- even the chicks sleep in the "preferred" box.
Should I make more nesting boxes for the hay storage area?
