Why do my Marans have different color feet?

I hate to break it to you at least I think but I have a hen,Lucky,Who is actually my avatar and looks exactly like one of yours and see isn't but I am a novice just my 2 cents.

The French standard is feathered, the British standard is clean legs. There is no American standard. I wouldn't call the British lines "tainted", they're better than ours are. Although Marans are indeed originally from Marans, France, the term "original" is frequently misused and misleading in connection with them.

The bird with the bright yellow beak and feet, look completely different than the others in the pictures. I would cull those out of your breeding flock..

The boy at the top of the pic has the weirdest color I've ever seen on a Barred Rock or Cuckoo Marans. No real barring, just really splotchy and faded out. Not sure what to make of it, but seems a pure Marans or BR should be different. He doesnt look pure for either breed, or his barring is just very diluted and fuzzy.

I should have said that I was repeating someone elses information. But I think the point that colored legs with no feathers indicates a mixed Maran line of some sort, is fairly clear.
But then, all this 'breedology' isnt my forte.
I wonder - are there any "real" Marans here in the US?

I vote "Breedology" should be the new name of the "Breeds in General" page.

There are a few breeders in the US that advertise they have imported lines. Then again, just because they have "imported lines" doesn't mean they haven't crossed those lines with US lines..

I think, not really sure, that Bev's Marans are imported.. I could be wrong, it's been over a year since I was on her site..

OH MY GOOOOSSSSHHHH!!!!!! I cant believe their mixed! (I feel really stupid! I payed $24 for Americana eggs too and because of the packaging 1/2 the eggs were no good and only 3 hatched...those do not even have beards, and they are like 5 months old!) I payed $18 for those dozen "Marans" eggs. Now what do I do, go back to the person who sold them to me or do I just assume that they didnt know they were mixed and let it pass? Truethfully, these eggs tht they were hatched from were not near as dark she had advertised them to be (I just wanted dark egglayers). Do BRs lay brown eggs?
Thank you for all your information everyone!!

PS~ I think that 'Breedology' should be the new name of 'Breeds in General' too. That's hilarious!!

I happen to know of someone who sells what he calls the "original" french feather-legged black copper marans in the US. It is rumoured that his hatching eggs go for over $100 a dozen on eggbid. I've heard really good things about his birds and the eggs are REALLY dark chocolate/brick colored. He sells straight run chicks at $10 a piece plus shipping and handling, minimum 10 chicks per shipment.

Blurose, is that the Black Copper King? I am already trying to get in touch with him, if that is him...do you know the name?

Does anyone have any idea what I should do with them now?? Contact the breeder??
Thank you all!

I wouldnt trouble myself over retribution. For all the selller knew, they WERE Maran eggs. Remember that the breed has several mutations: feather footed, non-feather footed. There are French Standards, English ones and NO common US standard.
What you got are probably eggs from hatchery stock, purchased as Maran. What else would the seller call them, in that case?
Letting 'em hatch and keeping your fingers crossed sounds like a good plan to me.
