Why do people... (warning this is a bit of a rant)

I NEVER SAID DONT CHARGE THE POOR I SAID DONT OVER CHARGE! WHEN I GOT MY CAT FIXED IT WAS A GOOD PRICE 45$ BUT THE NEXT WEEK MY MOM GOT HER CAT DONE AND SHE PAID 25 (AT THE SAME VET ) SO THEY DO MAKE THEIR OWN PRICES AND MOST DO OVER CHARGE

I have to agree with you Snugglepup. I wish people would work out on paper exactly how much everything is going to or could cost BEFORE they get the dog, not just the purchase price. I don't think even a 'free' dog could cost less than $500 to a first time owner, just buying necessities and shots, not even including neutering.

I've rescued 4 pound dogs, two of which have sadly passed on. We lost our Bloodhound nearly two weeks ago, and I was training her and our Labradork (as my husband calls her) for Search and Rescue. We have looked and looked for another suitable Bloodhound, but finding one the right age and temperament that wasn't the other side of the country was impossible. In a way I found that heartening, at least they're not one of the 'overpopular' breeds. Unfortunately they are cursed with being 'cute', and many first time owners lose any common sense and don't care to think about it turning into a huge, slobbery, clumsy and stubborn dog. They're amazed when 6 months down the line it is knocking their 3 yr old over, or chewing up their house while they are at work all day.

I feel guilty for getting our next puppy from a breeder, but at least I will know everything about her background and genetic health, as well as working potential. If it was simply a pet we were looking for, I would never buy from a breeder. There are too many wonderful dogs who have been unlucky and ended up with not so wonderful owners. It makes my blood boil when someone says to me that it is good we are getting a puppy from a breeder, because 'pound dogs have so many problems.' Look at your average human, and then tell me whose problematic.

I don't think most vets overcharge. They are running a business, same as a doctor or anyone else with extensive medical training. They have rent or lease or mortgage to pay on their office, employees to pay, equipment to buy, supplies and meds to order. Include insurance on their business and health bennies, work comp, etc of the employees, taxes.

They would be foolish to work at a loss or near loss. They have to recover loss from non paying clients, the occasional "free" work they do for an emergency or tragic circumstance.

Think about it, if we didn't have health insurance or access to public health departments, how many of is would go to the doctor as often?

My avian vet charges $65 just to walk in. Then add whatever meds, tests and stuff. Even though I volunteer for a non profit, I pay all those costs out of my own pocket on any rescue I take in. It would be nice to get a break, but I never ask and I never expect it. If I am broke for whatever reason, I just do without something so I can pay the bill, whether it be cable or internet that month or whatever. On the other hand, I have called a vet and paid toward a bill brought on by someone in the duck rescue community who needed help. I figure one day it will be paid forward and maybe in the future I am the one needing help and I will feel I can accept it.

Life is a balance. In order to have what you want, you have to be able to balance your needs to get your wants.

Do not feel guilty or apologize for pursuing getting a purebred dog from a breeder. You have a good, valid reason and what you are doing is preserving what the breed was intended to do. I felt the same way when I purchased my first AKC registered dog and spent lots of time apologizing for it, regardless of the fact that for over 35 years I never had a dog that did not come from the pound. Another way to look at it, if the dog is registered with the AKC, (no other registry) you have supported 90% of funding for animal health research that benefits all dogs. Thru grants awarded by the AKC raised by registration fees is how everyone benefits from heartworm preventatives, Frontline, orthopedic surgeries, and vaccinations.

I do not fel guilty about my purebred, only have one, but the rescue group we tried to save a dog from deemed us not good potential adopter because one dog had not had shots updated in almost 4 years. If they would read the whole application where it said prvious animals that dog had died at 18 years of age in my front yard running with the other dog, he just stopped running I walked out to see what had happened, by the time I got to him, his breathing had slowed, I carried him to the porch and he stopped breathing, little or no apparent suffering. BUT according to the rescue we were wrong for not having the vet verify him dead. He had been on geriatric meds for 4 years. If not having an old dog verified dead is enough reason not to let me adopt, the rescues can keep all thier dogs, I will buy from want adds or breeders. Adoption was gonna be as much as a purebred and not as much paperwork.

Yes my living dogs are up to date on their shots, and neutered no puppies for them. P.S. the dead dog is now 8 years behind on his shots so I know I cant adopt now.

Sorry about that mdbucks. We rescued some dogs from a rescue person because she deemed no one fit to adopt. Every dog had to go to a single pet home and no kids!!! It was ridicilious, they were great dogs and we found them terrific homes with kids and dogs. Gotta remember that rescue people are just volunteers and some project their own opinions into the mix, not necessarily what is best for the dog or rules of the rescue group. Some rescue organizations will not call them to task because there are so few homes, it is better than having the dogs put down.

Yeah, but after pointing out age, they just replied "the application has been reviewed"

so once a decission is made(at least with this group) there is no chance that they might have made a bad decision.

Like I said they can let thier rescue dog/cat/whatever stay in the foster home till its time is up, the bad part is I have ran into others with the same opinion of the way the rescue groups treated them. Want adds or breeders from now on this will cut out the "middle man" so if my dogs are messed up its all my fault. all three have been out with chickens by themselves and have never chased any of them.

I SOOOOO understand your feelings, and it's because people DON'T think.... that's really the problem. Everyone wants "instant" everything these days , and of course well-behaved pets take NO work at all....lol.

All my dogs were "throwaways" like these poor little guys and they are GREAT dogs.....now. They weren't when I got them. But hey, they're worth the time and effort. Keep that in mind as you deal with the frustrations caused by your fellow man. I feel the same way often.

Good for you. The problem with this issue out of Texas is that these dogs were not "throwaways" but pups sold to stock pet stores or internet websites for a quick, impulse buy. People paid thousands of dollars for the pups out these poor dogs. Never support a pet store or buy from a breeder that you cannot personally visit. If there is no market, these wastes of human DNA will have to shut down.
Man, I hated having to go there on puppymills..........................
