So I ran into a contact (didn't know them) that was quitting ducks.

It sort of bothered me. I really like ducks. They are wonderful. I wish more people did them.

So that's why it bothered me a bit to hear they were quitting raising them. Its sad. But I didn't get a chance to get a response from them, when I tried to ask why they were quitting.

Why do people quit ducks?

Is it because of noise?

Mine aren't that noisy as long as I feed them regularly on a consistent schedule.

Hoped you all might have some insight on this.

People quit animals for many reasons. Aging can affect one’s ability to care for their animals properly. Illness can do the same. Sometimes life just gets in the way, and they realize that their animals aren’t getting the attend they should. Or it gets to be too stressful to be taking care of animals along with everything else going on. Other life events can also come along that make it difficult or impossible to keep one’s animals.

I agree 100% with bobbi-j. :) I would also like to add, that there are those people who are new to the whole idea of having ducks as pets, because they are so cute and cuddly when they are small and don't realize what they signed up for prior to getting them.

IMO, Ducks are a huge responsibility over having a kitten or puppy as a first time pet. They have special nutritional needs at first. They are very messy because of their love for fresh clean water daily and they grow very, very fast! So if a person isn't already set up for ducks or have the funds and resources for their growing needs, this to makes it difficult to keep them.

Most importantly of all, there isn't an Avian Vet sitting on every corner who can assist you ASAP with an illness or injured duck.

I personally would rather see a first time duck owner who realizes they are in way over their heads with having ducks as pets. Rehome them sooner over later, before the ducks end up being the neglected dog chained up in the back yard barking nonstop for attention.

Not limited to only having just Ducks, not all pets are for everyone. Keeping them while neglecting them, is sinful and inhumane.

LMAO......They Think they want clean water....only to destroy, muddy it in less than 5 seconds!!!! Yes, I am rather new to ducks, actually any fowl. I grew up and currently have other animals (horses, cattle, etc.). Ducks are a WHOLE new adventure. I love it, but they can be more complex and needy than the average "pet". I sincerely appreciate those that love and enjoy them (count me as one), but also prefer if someone is over their head to be responsible to let others take over.

As someone who has quit ducks twice before it sticking this last time, they are messy. Messiest creatures on the planet. I got them the first time to make offspring to put in the freezer. Their duck faces were too cute for me to go through it and cleaning their water every day was a pain. I sold them. Tried again a few years later. Still messy. Still too cute. Sold them again. This time I took in some ducklings from a friend of a friend that had no idea what they were doing. They ended up being females so I got a muscovy drake, made some mule ducks and followed through on our meat plan finally.

I agree with you 100%. I’ve had cats and dogs, and caring for them is a piece of cake compared to ducks. I don’t people realize how much work caring for ducks are.

I think when some people start out, they think raising them is just like raising chickens with a pool added. It is not! They are messy in tight quarters but not bad if they have room to free range or spread out. They do love and need fresh water daily and they do LOVE mud so they are more work than chickens. Not everyone is willing or able to do that extra work.
