Why do they pip at the wrong end?

If the eggs were incubated in egg cartons with the pointy side down, how were they turned?
Did you tip the whole carton, or flip them upside down? Flipping upside down would be wrong. If the were small end up around day 14 when they align lengthwise, then they would get stuck upside down, even if they were correctly oriented after that. See:

Yes, eggs do hatch best on their sides.

I can't seem to be able to post a picture from my phone, but there are some good diagrams on this site and elsewhere on what size the air cell should grow to. Just search for "incubation air cell" pictures. An air cell that is too large is better than too small. A too large air cell will result in a smaller chick. A too small air cell will result in a chick that is too large and/or can't rotate to the air cell or have enough air and may drown. I don't weigh eggs, it is easier to candle and compare to the drawings of how large the air cell should be at what stage.
