Why do you guys keep turkeys?

I never thought in a million years that I would be keeping turkeys. All that everyone before me has said is true. Mine are so friendly. They always try to follow me into the house and then act upset when I shut the door. I like keeping heritage breeds too. I currently have only Royal Palms, but plain to add Bourbon Reds in late April.

I'm planning to hatch Bourbon Red and Midget White this year. I will report back later how much I love them! LOL

Out of all the critters we have, I LOVE my turkeys and my sheep the best. My turkeys free range and just kind of chill and do their own thing, unless of course your trying to feed then you're tripping over a whole flock of turkeys that just HAVE to see what you're doing LOL. I have a jake that weighs 25 pounds and still thinks he can fly up and sit on my arm when I open the feed bucket, OK, NOT, he's a little heavy now. They really are just funny birds to have around. Oh and people talk about broody silkies, they've never owned a broody turkey, they will try to hatch acorns, rocks, you name it.

Can turkeys free range in the same pasture as cows? What kind of shelter do they need?

I bought 25 day old Giant Whites last year, and raised 23 of them to the fall. They were meant to be on the supper table, and I really have never thought about keeping a turkey until I raised those guys. This year I am getting Ridley Bronze turkeys, and they are not all table-bound.

I guess they kind of grow on you- the Giant Whites really only have that one purpose though as far as I can tell- they can't breed naturally, so they end up with holiday names....Christmas, Thanksgiving etc

The guy at the rural king said Turkeys are real hard to raise. I have read alot of post for about 6 months before I joined and have never read that they were hard to raise?
