Why do you raise a Chook?

I grew in a large city but was founded by farmers, cattle ranchers, etc..so even though it was a city..it had a farm town feel..this would be Sacramento..and I know there are a lot of people here from there that can vouch for this. Anyway..Sac even has little town called Fair Oaks and old Fair Oaks has hundreds of free range chickens....it was common to go someplace and someone would usually have chickens.

Once we had our own land..we too wanted to have a couple of chickens..we just always enjoyed them so much..we ended up moving to Tucson..love it btw!!..and now we have an acre...we homeschool 3 teen boys and THEY are the ones who super want chickens!

common guys, want to hear from everybody... thanks a lot and lets keep posting... lol

i grow chickens for meat, turkeys to make sausages and bacon and turkeyburgers, ducks because i love their meat when cooked with sauerkraut or fried in lard at low temperature and this year i'll keep some chickens for eggs too. i also want to get a few geese and a few guineas, only to see if my family likes their meat. i don't grow birds as pets. i enjoy them while little, as everybody does, but i know exactly their purpose.

well i raise chooks because i have asthma and im allergic to almost anything that has fur..... well we have 2 cats and 1 dog a turtle and a rat..........my mother has the dog and the rat and my dad has 1 of that cats and same with my sister... since i cant touch them with out having to go to the hospital i asked my dad if we could get chickens.....we always raise chicks but we never kept them.....ebery year we would raise chicks......well so long story short i got baby chicks...well i hatched them they are 2 days old here they are!!

Well, i first got chickens - planned on 4, maybe 6, okay 8 - for free fertilizer and bug reduction. Oh, yah, they'll lay eggs, too, that will be good.

Never realized I could possibly fall so much in love with a CHICKEN! They all have their own personalities! Who knew?!?!?

So, now I keep them for their personalities; although I do sell their eggs, if they all stopped laying tomorrow (for natural reasons, not illness), it wouldn't matter one whit to me. They are beloved, outside pets. Which gift me with their eggs, eat up all the bugs, and provide great fertilizer.
