why does a hen peck holes in the eggs?

We have hens that are pecking their own eggs can you tell me wat is going on

min wer doing that for a while... they would peck a single hole, always into the air pocket of the egg...an old time farmer told me it a test peck... they peck it after they lay it to see if the shell is thick enough... he said they won't set on eggs if the shell is to thin... dunno if it is true or not, but it is what the old codger told me...
