Why does my rooster (5 months) bite the neck of my hen (same age)?

My rooster bit a huge chunk off of the back of the neck of one of my hens yesterday, what a bloody mess. Took her out this morning, free ranging in the yard but how do I treat this would, it's a flap you can lay back and see right down into the neck muscle. She seem no worse for the wear.

Nope...your roo is breeding age and he is getting his moves down. Pretty soon he will get it right and start to breed.
