hi there,

I got 3 chickens at laying age about5-6 weeks ago.. When we got them, we started getting eggs pretty much straight away from one of them and over time we have got more to the point of now where we are getting three most days. However, my white chicken has layer small eggs from the start. She is a little smaller in frame but not massively. I thought that over time she would start laying bigger but they have not got bigger at all.

Is this normal or common for white chickens to lays smaller? Is there something I can do to help her lay bigger?
please help :)

I have three Isa Brown chickens all different colours. One is orange, black and the last is the white one that we are talking about. Both the other two are laying very decent sized eggs

The egg size will get larger quickly if the hen lays PeeWee or Small eggs when she first starts to lay, the eggs should get larger right away. But if the hen is already laying a good sized egg like a medium to large. And the egg is staying about the same size the increase in size will be fairly slow and will take a lot of time, weeks to months.

The hen needs to be have enough room inside to produce the larger eggs. As she get older the hen will get a bit bigger and wider so there should be an increase in egg size. The egg size does usually gets larger after the chicken molts. The first real molt is usually around 16 months. But it wont be a real big change. If you are lucky a medium could become a large over enough time.

The difference between a medium and a large egg is only about 1/2 tablespoon of egg. So not that big of a increase.

Don't try to overfeed or over-treat her to make her bigger. Overfeeding just makes a hen fat and fat chickens wont lay.
