Why does she jump on my back

It would be cool to walk a few of the girls. I can't let my girls free range because we have 3 types of hawks that have nests either on our property or close by and we have nesting eagles (one has visited us) within food hunting range. Also, my neighbor has two golden retrievers that sometimes visit the yard.

I really think my Buff Orpingtons would stick close by if I camped out in the garden all day but I'm not ready to risk the adventure. As long as I had treats, I think they would stay close to me. Walking one on a chicken harness around our property would be neat.

My pullet thats really attached to me (lived inside the longest when it was cold, etc) loves jumping on my head. Now that shes nearly a full sized chicken I have to really be careful where I bend over or stand for a while or she will come swooping to my head. She likes that she can hold on to my hair and stand there. I don't know whether its creepy or funny to other people, but I think its cute!

I have a BO who always jumped up on my shoulder while she was growing up. She'd jump up on my husband's head. I guess cuz he was always wearing a hoodie. Was really sweet. She no longer does this now that she's 2 1/2 but does still come right up to me to see if I have treats and will let me pick her up and hold her.

I have a BR, Lucy, who loves to jump on my back when I bend down (or in my lap if I sit in a chair). Now she's convinced my Columbian Wyandotte, Roxy, to do the same thing. My other two chickens just look at us like we're crazy.

That is so sweet Sometimes it jumps on my back then goes up to my head and scratches at my hair like she find some food in there Super painful and her nails get stuck in my hair!!!

I love that I can look on this website and find the answer to any question I have about chickens! I have one barred rock that can't wait to jump on my shoulder every time my wife and I walk outside (treats or no treats). She gives us the evil eye if we don't bend down and let her do it. We think it's sweet (even when she pecks on my ears), but I wanted to make sure the behavior was normal and not a "dominance" type of thing.

Just a reminder, I wouldn't try and look at them while they are on your shoulder. They might peck at your eyelashes and hurt your eye. If I need to look at them I cover my eyes with my hands and peek through my fingers, just incase they get curious about my eyes. ;)

Can't get enough of the wisdom on here!
