Why doesn't my new feeder have a lid?

when I first got my feeder, my hens were laying and everyday I would have 2 eggs inside the feeder. So I put a board over it, and yest. I moved it and today they perched on top of it and theres some poo in the feed down below. I may take some chicken wire and make a cone shape or something like that to keep them off.
