why elevated coops?

Interesting about your 5:1 slope. I've been wondering how that would work out...building a run down a fairly steep slope like that. I can see how one could build their coop out over a slope on 'stilts', actually poles or posts. Reason I'm asking is that, as most folks here in east Tennessee, I've got more hills than flat land that is available for building. Actually it would be a great way to use up some of my sloping areas and leave my few semi-level spots for other uses. You have any pics of your coop/run setup?

I elevated mine because my ground was not level, and I wanted to increase the size of the run, and give them a shaddy or sheltered area from rain & snow.
