Why flip 5 gallon bucket waterer over?

Why do you have to put the lid on and then flip it over? Why cant you just drill wholes around the the bottom and then put the lid on it?

You can and I've done them that way. However, the lid must be attached tightly when in use (use something to plug the holes while filling that you can remove to fill the pan)so the water doesn't overfill the pan. And you usually wait for the bucket to be almost empty because when you remove the lid to refill the bucket the water will overflow the pan then too.

I did that as well but failed to realize that the suction provided by the closed lid (think drinking straw with your thumb on the top) was not there and nothing kept the tray from overflowing! Now I have to turn the darn thing into a feeder and make a new waterer. Helps to learn from one's mistakes!
