Why have a coop 2 feet off the ground?

Is it that strict??? WOW!!! I didn't realize how strict. I don't think that I could have ever passed any inspections because we just build what we want in the country.

I was born and raised in the counrty so getting use to these "city" ways took a while. However, once you live in suburbia you soon realize why they have ordinances, people will do the darnest things. Eventually I will move back to the country and when the time comes to put my house on the market I don't want my property value to take a nose dive because my next door nieghbor thought a school bus painted pink would make a good playhouse for their kids.

Don't have a problem with it in the country as long as I can't see it.

LOL gotta love rules. The permit part I'm sure is for the revenue purpose. People who want to be legal pay it and people who don't get a fine it's a win win. Thank Heavens I'm in the sticks. Shoot I can't even get High speed where I live.

About 4 years ago I had new windows put in my house. The inspector just happen to drive by and saw the trucks and checked and I didn't have a permit. Did realize I needed one for replacement windows. He issued a stop work order right then and there and yes you guessed it I had a window with no window in it. To say I was mad as an old wet hen was an understatement. I immediately went to city hall and politely gave them a piece of my mind. I requested to talk to the mayor on the spot. He heard me (keep in mind I was not raising my voice) and he came out. I told him this was just a fleecing of any already over taxed tax payor and it was all about the $150 permit fee and a chance to raise my property value to increase my taxes.
Long story short I got my windows put in that day and got the permit after the fact. I'm still think a permit for the replacement of something on the property is wrong.

I live in a small rustbelt town. All this talk makes me wonder if it isn't best not to bother trying to get chickens legal. Right now they are technically illegal, but hardly anyone knows that, even the people who work for the city. One of the city employees has backyard chickens. Another said they were quite legal as long as they are pets. No one can see our chickens from outside our yard (it's about a half acre and we placed the coop and pen carefully, painted and brown so it blends right in with the landscape).

Why should you need a permit to have chickens when anyone can buy a dog license with no one inspecting how the dog is going to be kept?
