Why have a rooster, except for hatching out eggs?

Well, if I didn't have the room I wouldn't have one but I do have the room so I have many. They are so beautiful and fun to watch them take care of their girls. They truly are protectors and everything else the other posts say they are. My husband is from Hispanic decent and says his mom always had a rooster. It was a supersticious thing. I even read a post on here somewhere that their rooster killed a hawk that was attacking his hen.

I have a roo in everyone of my pens, most keep the girls in line, plus unless you can't have one it, just doesn't seem right not to have one

I have way more Roo's then is necessary. I keep mutt Roo's, Back up for my back up Roo's.
Last count was over 35 cockerels/Roo's on the property. lolol I guess I like em too.

Moral obligation? Because roosters get the short end of the stick right from the get-go.

Pretty flimsy reason? I thought so, too.

But a good one

To be honest, because occasionally the hatcheries make a mistake and send one along with your ALL PULLET order, But you fall in love with your EE anyway, and now consider him an important part of your flock.

Honestly, as much as I love having roos, I don't think I would in your situation. With only three hens in a tractor type set up they'll probably get overbred (Not for sure, but likely) and if that happens what will you do? It can be hard to find a roo a good home that doesn't involve freezer camp. Id stick with hens for now and when you enlarge (and you probably will, 'cause were all addicts) then think about getting a roo. Also, since you live on an urban lot do you know if you have any laws or neighborhood covenents that wouldn't allow you to keep a roo or even hens? If you're going to be an underground chicken keeper you definetley don't want the attention a roo would bring.

Eggsactly.

I love my accidental roo. Right now, he's being a bit selfish and wanting all the good stuff first for himself, but I noticed he's started to "round up" the girls to go into the coop each night. He's mature enough to mate, but is still an adolescent (19 wks). He makes the most interesting sounds other than his crowing!

I think the cutest thing, right now, is when he and his harem sun bathe together. They pile up in a mass o' chickens in the sunniest spot they can find, then start lolling slightly to their sides, with one wing and a leg spread out. He makes a sort of burbling coo sound as each girl joins the mob.

I had planned on rehoming or returning any rooster that was supposed to be a pullet (the feed store said they'd take 'em back), but I love this guy.

Oh man, I just had to get rid of my roo and this thread makes me so sad. I didn't get to see him in all his glory...

I need to move out of the city to a place where I can keep roos...

because once you have one, you'll understand completely.

I was told this too and for me that wasn't the case. I did love my roo and he was good to "big" people but he attached my little boy every chance he got. The last straw was when he come close to getting his face. Otherwise he was very good to his girls -the bare backs of his favorites though.
