Why have a rooster

I only have hens now since I can't imagine having all that rooster noise. If I wanted to raise some chicks, could I "rent" a rooster for a time? Should I? Is there a better way?
Thx,

I'd personally either buy one day old chicks or fertile eggs (i have a hen sitting on bought fertile eggs currently). "renting" a roo could jeopardise your biosecurity (i.e. possibly introduce disease to your flock) - its not a risk worth taking IMO.

If I don't have any roosters in my young flock, I'd prefer to raise one and then integrate him just because I'd want my own, but the point you just made is a really great one! I never thought about that. It ain't so much like breeding horses or other animals. Glad you mentioned that.
