Why have chickens?

I understand too well the pain of losing a loved pet. Like most things in life, having them is a double edge sword. My little dog put a smile on my face and warmed my heart every day for 12 years, and I paid dearly when he passed, still do after 2 years. Fear of that pain of loss does not protect you from it, it robs you of life. My 2 cents.

Because a lot of people don't believe humans are animals
Okay.
Semantic 1: I believe lots of humans are animals.
Semantic 2 : I believe humans as a species are a kind of animals.

I bet you eat chicken....but have never eaten a human.
I certainly don’t eat humans and I don't eat pigs, sheep, dear, rabbits, cats, apes, kangoeroe, ostriches or chickens (not anymore). I do eat chick peas though and eggs too.

And I don’t live in the woods but in a town where it’s forbidden to cut trees but we have an internet connection, tapwater, gas pipes, fiber optic cable, sewerage and an electricity connection.
I don't have to hunt for proteïne like my ancestors did. I don’t even have to grow my own veggies but I can buy them at the grocery store. I do have a shower, water closet, central heating, a microwave, washing machine, vacuum cleaner and a lot more to make my life more comfortable and easier as my grant-mothers. Lots of things have changed in this world the past 100 years. And with 8 billion people I don’t think it would even be possible to live the way people did 100 years ago.

I have had to take a pragmatic approach to having animals. I'm a softy on the inside and have been heartbroken before with the loss of pets, that's why I don't have any now. Although I truly care about my birds I go into it knowing that all of them will be gone one day, one way or another. My birds are a source of enjoyment, watching their silly antics, but they are also a source of eggs and meat(that's why I got them). It is the cycle of life. Although I don't enjoy doing it at all and it's emotionally difficult for me, I do my own butchering. No one should enjoy taking life. Whether it's hunting or butchering one should feel remorse in killing, but not so much that it keeps you from being able to do it while providing for yourself, family, and loved ones. While my birds are here I enjoy them, protect them, and take good care of them until it's time for them to go, one way or another.
I've NEVER killed any of my animals cause I'm too soft when it comes to my pets.
Yet I'm not so soft that I could hunt if I need to, I would like to hunt with hawks and falcons one day though!

Yeah, there wouldn't be anymore animals left to hunt :lau

For me it would be hard to kill my chickens.

Then like I said before.....
.... maybe you should not participate in a thread that talks about it.
Seriously....start your own thread where you can slam the meat eaters.

Yeah, there wouldn't be anymore animals left to hunt

That's because of where you live. We have a vast expanse of very rural areas here in the USA, many do live as I outlined. We also don't live under socialist control as you do, yet....

So your attitude is, not kill animals but let our elderly die, or kill them. WOW, that says it all right there!
I think it was more that when we know an animal is in pain, it's 'right' to put it down. But even an elderly person in pain with no quality of life isn't allowed to be put down, often even when they request it themselves

? We don’t have socialist control. We are a democracy with a multi party government (at the moment 2 liberal + 2 christian parties). And we have a king that officially has no influence at all in our government. If you refer to Europe. That’s a democracy too, with at the moment a mainly socialist/christian government with little influence on how countries operate. They make the outlines and laws to protect our environment and civilians.

? You twist my idea of being humane to elderly and animals completely. Its humane to let elderly live a long and happy life even if they need care.

I dont mean to slam, just try to let you understand that there are people in this world who have another perspective.
And I stop reacting if you don't come with arguments that are incorrect or misinterpret my thoughts.

The question was ‘Why have chickens?’ Not ‘how can I kill chickens?’ And I wouldn’t even have read this thread if OP started with the second question.
I have chickens because they make me happy and I try to give them a long and happy life. 🛑

When my great grandfather was almost 92 he was tired of life. Although he was in pretty good health he just couldn't do all the things he once did, and he had done all that he wanted to. He went out his way on his terms. He chose to just stop eating. Because this was his mindset he showed no signs of suffering, just slowly faded away. The last time I saw him I was 16 and had just come back from being a carpenter assistant, building a house at Clayton Lake up in the Allagash area of northern Maine. He was confined to his bed but was alert and very interested and happy in hearing stories of my adventure. He passed not long after that in his own bed, in his own farm, and in the house where my father and many of his cousins were born. He was 92.
