Why have chickens?

I honestly don't know how I would be today if not for my chickens. I love them! I have something to look forward to do in the mornings that makes me happy. Do chickens have different personalities? You bet! Do I get a chuckle as I watch these different personalities? You bet. I walk out there and wait for "the" moment of the day. If it doesn't happen in the morning, then it's happening sometime later in the day. I am always peeking out the window to watch them through out the day.

They're individual personalities is #1! I call them my two legged puppies. They always run up to me just like the dogs! Not to mention, the dogs love them! I've never had any luck with my dogs behaving around farm animals (horses, pigs, cats, they're all chew toys to them...until the chickens came along) They give me a reason to wake up early and watch the sunrise which honestly I can't thank them enough for! They really improve your personal quality of life. I couldn't imagine sleeping in until 11-12 like the rest of the household. Half of their day was wasted sleeping, meanwhile I'm playing with the chickens.

and eggs of course. AND FEATHERS FOR YOU CRAFTY FOLK such as myself! I love collecting feathers, so many different colors and sizes, craft possibilities are endless. Chickens also make great photo subjects.

As for downs.... if you think you're going to save money on buying eggs, you're wrong....
If you didn't grow up cleaning up poop, you'll have to start doing that.
If you have a job, you'll probably quit it to stay home with your chickens (I did)

PROS: All of the above, leaping chickens are funny, they love to play.

CONS: Your non-chicken owning friends come to refer to you as "the crazy chicken lady" because you talk about chickens like they're your kids and you even whip out your (digital) photo album to show them off.

Green eggs for my ham :D

Or pink or blue eggs in my basket....

Or dark brown, or tan or cream, or even speckled....

Really, just the lure of the treasure hunt every day, to see how many... what color?

And to see the joy as they rush out of the coop in the morning to greet me, and the calm as they perch on their roost at night as I tuck them in.

Pros: having my sweet 2 month old chick run over to me to get picked up and carried (she has curled toes and is the smallest chick I have).
My grandson asking to hold every chick so he can chose his favorite.
Con: having to leave them for the day to go to work.

The Pros. Way outweigh the cons

Very relaxing. But keep you busy

Mine just ate a baby scorpion, like it was a fly.

Another milestone today, my Easter Egger was roosting for the night. I went to check on them and was petting one and she crawled onto my arm and settled down, it was a shame I had to move.

Pros: hilarious to watch anywhere anytime.
Healthy and nuitrious eggs and or meat
Make a great companion animal
Brighten up my day
Their running makes me laugh (those drumstick thighs!) :D

Cons: you have to pick the right breed or you could have a bad experience (love my orpingtons hate my leghorns)
Like to wonder where they are not suppose to
Can get into trouble
I REALLY hate predators (expecially raccoons)
I can only have so many, because I'm not the one setting the rules of the house... :(
