Why I hate ordering straight run.....

LOL, you know what, your right! When I ordered I was trying to save money so I ordered straight run. When I posted originally I had completely forgotten that they did offer sexing because I have been on every hatchery website about 100 times over the last couple of months and lost track of who offered it and who didn't. When the first poster mentioned about them offloading males I went back and checked Ideal and sure enough they were one that did offer sexing. I am planning to order from them again (although I do have to say that I am not completely happy that they shorted me one, one was DOA and another 2 didn't make it a full 24 hours but Ideal is refunding me the money). I do wish they sent an extra or two...or at least sent all that I ordered but I am hoping it was a one time thing and I am giving them another chance before I decide not to use them again. This time I am ordering everything sexed instead of trying to save a few dollars....the extra money saved is not worth the hassle of trying to find homes for all of these extra males.

And yes, I know for sure that all the males are in fact males....they were not shy :p

I can not talk about any hatchery other than the one I ordered from, which was Cackle, and my order was chicks not ducklings. All arrived alive and lived, by the way. I ordered 6 straight run Speckled Sussex and got 4 male and two female. Good enough. I ordered 6 straight run Buff Orpington and got another as a packing peanut. All seven were female. You can see what the odds of that are in the table below. This means that someone in the 128 that ordered 7 straight run got 7 males and is convinced that Cackle ships practically nothing but males in the straight runs. Or 29 out of 128 got 5 or more males and think the same thing.

7 male 0 female - 1 in 128 or 0.8%
6 male 1 female - 7 in 128 or 5.5%
5 male 2 female - 21 in 128 or 16.4%
4 male 3 female - 35 in 128 or 27.3%
3 male 4 female - 35 in 128 or 27.3%
2 male 5 female - 21 in 128 or 16.4%
1 male 6 female - 7 in 128 or 5.5%
0 male 7 female - 1 in 128 or 0.8%

I ordered 6 of each as I figured my odds of getting at least one male and one female of each were pretty good. Boy, was I wrong. But I wound up with a pretty good Speckled Sussex as flock master so I am satisfied. Just for kicks, here's the odds for ordering 6 straight run.

6 male 0 female - 1 in 64 or 1.6%
5 male 1 female - 6 in 64 or 9.4%
4 male 2 female - 15 in 64 or 23.4%
3 male 3 female - 20 in 64 or 31.3%
2 male 4 female - 15 in 64 or 23.4%
1 male 5 female - 6 in 64 or 9.4%
0 male 6 female - 1 in 64 or 1.6%

LOL, I know what you mean, Tattoo- all the hatchery sites start to blend together once you have looked at all of them. I always read something and then forget where I read it or think I saw it on one site and it was really on another, LOL.

Anyway, that is unfortunate about all those extra boys. Hopefully, you will be able to find homes for them and get more girls. Ideal generally has a pretty good reputation, so I hope all works out. You can always try someplace like Metzers too. They offer sexing and are very reputable. It may have been an honest mistake too or the natural break down of the sexes. Last year, I had the exact opposite problem, I ended up with FAR more females than males, all across the board (some varieties were all females).

I've had really good luck ordering straight run from McMurray. I've ordered birds 3 times, and each time ended up with more females than males. I know not everyone has been that lucky, but you won't hear me complaining.

I have heard a lot of really good things about Ideal so I am willing to try again. I have heard good things about Metzers too! I think it would have been less annoying if I had gotten more females than males because it's so hard to rehome the males.

I think that's where I went wrong. I ordered straight run from McMurray twice and got equal males and females so I just assumed there would be a mix of genders if I ordered 5 of each breed from Ideal too.....but then we all know where making assumptions gets us, lol. I should have known better.
