I have several silkies....some show quality and some not. I just like having them around becuase they are quiet, friendly and cute. I also LOVE them for thier broody-ness. Case in point: today, after waiting 21 days for my brassyback OEG to hatch out her eggs I hit paydirt. Well, sort of. The minute the chicks started hatching, the hen started screaming at them and killed one...while trying to get the others out of the nest.
So, here I am thinking NOW WHAT?
So, I decided to try them with my dark blue silkie hen that is a great mom (not broody right now but thought I would chance it). I went and got her, let her hear the chicks peeping and
she jumped right on the nest and started clucking to them. that was at 6 am, and I just went and checked on them and 2 more hatched and she is in full broody/protection mode!!
So anyway, I just wanted to share.
