Perhaps one way that would help you to be able to come to terms with all of this (along with continued counseling) is to maybe tell your story to local middle schools and high school students. Warn them of the dangers of drinking and driving. Show them the pictures of your car...of your injuries...of YOU standing there before them telling your story, that you were one of the lucky ones. The more you talk about it, the more it helps, and the more people you can help, the more lives you will save - and in that process - you help to heal yourself.

I really agree that sharing your story with teens will help you heal. The teens REALLY need to hear these kinds of realities.

Now that I am done crying...I am so sorry you went through this ordeal! Last Saturday morning at 10:00 in the morning as my dh and I were leaving our small town of Smithville, Mo. We encountered a drunk driver ...he was swerving all over three lanes of traffic, almost took out the light poles and as I was calling his vehicle in as a possible drunk driver they ran his plates and said he had switched plates and a convicted child molester..He rearended a little old man and thank god he was alright but the police showed up and a big thank you for us helping to get a drunk driver off our streets and actually it is a highway that he was on! My niece has had two duis and hopefully this last time she has learned her lesson! I dont tolerate drinking and driving and hope everyone gets to read your story! Please share it with everyone you meet and any teens or preteens you can! Maybe blog it to all your friends you dont hang with anymore...if it saves one life its worth it and it will help you heal! Sorry this is so long but its important to share!

What irritates me the most is that here in WI they are trying to get tougher DUI laws passed and the the mighty Tavern League steps in whining about their business ( and I am sure threateneing to cut funding to certain legislators....)!!!!! So in the end nothing is accomplished, people continue to drive with 15+ DUI's, revoked licenses, unpaid fines...... etc.....

If they actually went back and nailed the bar that served the alcohol there might be some changes in the numbers of drunks on the roads, but I know it won't eliminate them all.....

I think if I were you, I would be HOUNDING my state reps about tougher laws against DUI and how there needs to be accountability for these senseless accidents. I like the idea of giving talks to high school students too; bring the pictures of your vehicle and all of the other accident scene pics. Visual aids work well!!!

You are a brave wonderful person, and God has a plan for you, or you would not have survived such a horrific accident. The way you can describe it to such graphic detail tells us that you still are horrifically impacted by this, but talking about it will help. It will help those demons haunting your dreams go away. I think, and this is JMPO, but have you ever thought of contacting the local guidance counselor's at local high schools and telling the students your story? You have a gift for letting us see the horror of that night, and maybe you could make ONE kid think twice before getting into a car with drinkers or driving and drinking their selves. Bless your heart for sharing with us, you are in all of our thoughts and prayers for coming this far through a horrible incident. Good luck and God Bless.

We have had a lot of tragedy around our area lately. 3 teens run down and killed by a drunk driver while walking.

I have personal friend that was almost killed in Southern Ontario that spent 6 months in hospital (after coming within an inch of her life) recovering and still has long term effects.

Don't drink and drive.

Ok darling I am so so sorry you have to go through the accident and the entire experience. It does help to share your feelings because only when we acknowledge them and accept them can we move forward.

Please never ever feel guilty that it was you who lived while another girl died. It is never up to us to decide when it we go. Our life is is laid out before us and when the Creator wants us to come home...he calls us to him. It was not your time to die...there is more in this life you must do and accomplish. There is a reason you were spared. In time that reason will become apparent to you. Maybe it is so you can teacah others your age and around you about drinking and driving...maybe you are destined for greatness yet to come or maybe it is a reminder to you of how precious life is and how quickly it can be gone. Only you will know when the revelation hits you. You have been blessed through the pain of the injuries and accident...one day you will know why.
