big bob, my black jersey giant rooster, has decided to roost in a magnolia tree that grows right next to my deck. he can see through the glass door and crows anytime i turn on the porch light. why would he leave the girls (6 hens) alone in the "freerange" coop? does he love me that much and yearns to be a house chicken? he is a sweetheart. is he leading an alternative lifestyle? or is he just too big and bulky to follow his harem up to the highest roost where they like to sleep? im confused with his behavior. of course, i have seen stranger things. my light brahma hen likes to share the doghouse with my great dane....

any thoughts or solutions?

Perhaps he feels he can keep an eye on the whole "plantation" by choosing to roost in that spot.

I have a small group of 3 Lav Orp hens and two bantam cochin roos who all roost on my back porch on a shelf together. They HAD a coop just for them, but when the big ol' Lav Orps (and they are large ladies) felt they couldn't roost on the bar in IT, comfortably enough. So they all squeeze in next to each other on this utility shelf...

Who knows why chickens do what they do? If all of your hens also refused to sleep in your free range coop, I would look for mites or mice living in it.

no, all the ladies go to the coop....its just bob! all the chickens are very healthy and the coop is clean.
