WHy is it good to NOT CARE what others think?

Why is this nation so hung up on sex??? And why are there words that are "bad"??? If these things weren't so taboo in our culture, they wouldn't be so offending, and wouldn't be used for rebellion. I have to agree with George Carlin on those subjects. Words are words, it all depends on how and why it is being used. My kids curse, I allow it, but it has to be used properly. If I hear one of them cursing, I know there is a problem and need to find out why she feels the need to use such strong language. Sometimes there is a need for a stronger emphasis when trying to get your point across, and the so called "bad" words fit that purpose without having to YELL. Sex sells, it is part of our basic instincts. If we didn't care what other people think of us, why would we have a need for the products which sex is being used in advertisement? Do we really need to have the Calvin Klien underwear when Fruit Of The Loom or Haines makes them just as good, or is it because of very good looking models splashed on all the adverts for Calvin Klien gives you the subliminal message that if you wear these you can look as good as the model?

I have raised my kids to not care what others think of them,but to worry more of what they thought of themself.
we are our own worst critic.
My youngets daughter was goth and a cheer leader,my youngest son has Aspergers so he does realy realy well academically but not socialy.
So as to what others think of me I dont care,im happy with who I am and thats what counts.

My 12 year old stresses a lot about what his brothers are saying about him or what they think about him. We keep stressing to him to not worry about it, because in all reality, WHO CARES! That is the bottom line to the main question here. WHO CARES what other people think and shame on the people who make others nervous intentionally. If you spend your life caring about what others think, then your personality will never have the chance to develop to it's full capacity. Then it is YOU who will miss out on the good things in life because you will always be to nervous to just be you.

I try to teach our kids that they can't feel good about themselves unless they belittle and humiliate others. Our youngest is a particularly slow learner - just yesterday he picked flowers for a neighbor - but I'll eventually bludgeon the concept into him.

i have the i dont care attitude also, regaling some school days when i was tortured by people who really cared about everything. after years of that i have developed the attitude. i have never been in trouble with the law and i lead a decent moral way of life. while others look down at me and ask " why have you not gotten farther in life" and i tell them flat out that i am not a social climber, i dont look for ways to get money without clearly working hard for it and other things that come with that territory, and i can go to bed with a clear conscience. i dont have to look over my shoulder and worry if i should have done it differently. if you worry about what people think of you, youll never experience life and the joys of doing things your way. so i say screw what other people think, if you live a decent moral life you have nothing to worry about. good rule of thumb when it comes time to be judge is your conscience clear.
